A large share of Indian adults have flat feet — some estimates put it at nearly one in four. Most of them have never been told, because flat feet rarely announce themselves with a diagnosis. They announce themselves quietly, as an ache that shows up by early afternoon and gets blamed on "standing too much" or "an old pair of shoes." It is neither. What Flat Feet Actually Change
A normal arch acts as a spring. It flexes under load when your heel strikes the ground, absorbing impact, then returns to shape as your weight shifts forward, helping propel the next step. Flat feet — where the arch has little to no elevation, so the sole makes near-full contact with the ground — cannot do this efficiently. The load that would normally be distributed through the arch is redirected into the ankle, the shin, and the lower back.
This usually shows up as overpronation — the foot rolling inward more than it should with each step. On its own, a few degrees of overpronation is not a problem. In a shoe with no structure to check it, hour after hour, it becomes one. The muscles that would otherwise be assisted by a working arch have to do that job manually, all day, which is precisely why flat feet produce fatigue rather than sharp pain — a heaviness that builds rather than a single moment of injury.
A rough way to check without a podiatrist: wet the sole of your foot and step once onto a dry surface or a sheet of paper. A normal arch leaves a print with a narrow band connecting heel and forefoot. A flat foot leaves almost the full outline of the sole, with little to no gap along the inner edge. It is not a diagnosis, but it is usually enough to explain why certain shoes have never felt right.

Sports shoe brands solved this problem for running shoes decades ago — stability models with medial posts and structured heel counters are a standard category. A traditional dress shoe is built for silhouette first: a slim last, a thin leather sole, minimal midsole structure, and often no meaningful arch contour in the footbed at all. That is a fine shoe for someone with a naturally supportive arch. For someone with flat feet, it removes the one thing the foot most needs and replaces it with nothing.
This is also why so many Indian professionals with flat feet describe formal shoes as "fine for a few hours" and then unbearable — the shoe was never checking the overpronation, and by mid-afternoon, the accumulated strain in the ankle and lower back catches up.
What to Actually Look For
Arch support is the headline requirement, but it is not the only one. A formal shoe genuinely built for flat feet should have:
- A contoured footbed that cradles the medial arch rather than a flat insole that leaves it entirely unsupported.
- A firm, structured heel counter — the internal cup around the heel — to limit inward rolling at the point of impact, which is where overpronation begins.
- A supportive midsole with enough density to resist compressing flat under load, rather than a soft sole that offers no resistance to the foot rolling inward.
- Room for a removable insole, in case an orthotic has been prescribed — many flat-footed wearers eventually need one, and a shoe that cannot accommodate it becomes unusable the moment that happens.
Avoid shoes that market themselves as "ultra flexible" or "bends like a slipper." That flexibility is exactly what a flat foot does not need — it removes the external structure that would otherwise compensate for the arch's own lack of it. A formal shoe for flat feet should feel composed underfoot, not soft.
